What Weekly Holiday Pay Is
Article 55 of the Labor Standards Act gives every worker at least one paid day off per week. If you work all of your scheduled days in a week and your contracted hours are 15 or more, your employer must pay you for that rest day even though you do not work it. This applies equally to part-time, temporary, and student workers.
The Formula
Paid holiday hours equal your weekly contracted hours divided by 40, multiplied by 8, with the weekly hours capped at 40. Multiply those hours by your hourly wage to get the weekly holiday pay. A 20-hour week therefore earns 4 paid hours, and a full 40-hour week earns 8.
Monthly Pay and the 209-Hour Rule
The familiar figure of 209 hours per month for a full-time job already includes weekly holiday pay: 40 working hours plus 8 holiday hours, multiplied by about 4.345 weeks. That is why the 2026 minimum monthly wage of 2,156,880 won is 10,320 won times 209. If your monthly salary is quoted that way, do not add holiday pay a second time.
Common Disputes
Holiday pay is lost only for a week with an unexcused absence, not for lateness or early departure. Splitting a schedule into contracts under 15 hours to avoid it is a frequent problem, so check the hours written in your contract. Unpaid holiday pay counts as unpaid wages and can be reported to the Ministry of Employment and Labor.
