How the Job-Seeking Allowance Works

Korea's unemployment benefit, officially the job-seeking allowance under the Employment Insurance Act, pays 60% of your average daily wage for a fixed number of days. For people who left on or after 1 January 2026, the daily amount cannot exceed 68,100 won and cannot fall below 80% of the minimum wage for your daily contracted hours, which is 66,048 won for an 8-hour day.

Why Most People Get Nearly the Same Amount

Because the cap and floor are only about 2,000 won apart, the allowance behaves almost like a flat rate. Anyone earning less than roughly 3.4 million won a month receives the floor, and anyone above that reaches the cap. Part-time workers with fewer daily hours get a proportionally lower floor.

How Many Days You Receive It

Benefit days range from 120 to 270 and depend on how long you were insured and your age when you left. Workers aged 50 or older and people with a registered disability receive more days at each coverage level. Ten or more years of coverage at age 50+ gives the 270-day maximum.

Eligibility Checklist

You need at least 180 insured days in the 18 months before leaving, and the separation must be involuntary, such as a layoff, contract expiry, or recommended resignation. Quitting voluntarily usually disqualifies you unless there is a recognized reason such as unpaid wages or a long commute after relocation. You must also register with Employment 24 and show regular job-search activity.
