How GPA Is Calculated
GPA is the weighted average of grade points across courses. Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, sum all results, then divide by total credit hours. An A (4.0) in a 3-credit course contributes 12 grade points. A B (3.0) in a 4-credit course contributes 12. Total 24 ÷ 7 credits = 3.43 GPA.
GPA Scales Around the World
The US uses a 4.0 scale. Germany uses 1.0–5.0 (1.0 is best). The UK uses degree classifications (First, 2:1, 2:2, Third). Korea uses either 4.0 or 4.5 scales depending on the university. Some Korean universities use 100-point scales converted to letter grades.
GPA Requirements for Graduate School
Most US graduate programs require a minimum 3.0 GPA. Top programs (law, medicine, PhD) typically want 3.5+. However, GPA is one factor; research experience, test scores (GMAT, GRE), and recommendation letters also carry significant weight. A low GPA in early years can be offset by strong recent performance.
