Understanding Your BMI Results
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a calculation using your height and weight to estimate body fat. Healthcare professionals use it as a screening tool to identify potential weight-related health risks.
BMI Categories
Under 18.5 is underweight. 18.5–24.9 is normal weight, associated with the lowest health risks. 25–29.9 is overweight. 30 and above indicates obesity, significantly raising risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension.
Limitations of BMI
BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes with high muscle mass often show elevated BMI despite being healthy. It also ignores age, sex, bone density, and fat distribution. Waist circumference measurement provides additional useful context.
What to Do With Your Result
Treat BMI as one indicator among many. If outside the normal range, consider consulting a healthcare provider. Sustainable changes in diet, regular physical activity, and sleep quality are more effective than rapid interventions.
