What Your BMI Score Really Means (And Its Limitations)

BMI is one of the most widely used health measurements worldwide. Learn how it is calculated, what the numbers mean, and why it is not always the full picture.

What Is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated from a person's weight and height. It was developed in the 1830s by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet and became a widely adopted screening tool for identifying weight-related health risks in adults. The formula is straightforward: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (kg/m²). A BMI of 22, for example, is considered firmly within the healthy range for most adults.

BMI is valued by healthcare professionals primarily for its simplicity. It requires no special equipment, costs nothing to calculate, and can be applied across large populations for epidemiological research. It is not a diagnostic tool but rather a first-pass screening indicator that may prompt further investigation.

Understanding the BMI Scale

The standard WHO BMI classification divides adults into four main categories: Underweight (below 18.5), Normal weight (18.5–24.9), Overweight (25.0–29.9), and Obese (30.0 and above). However, researchers have recognized that these thresholds were primarily developed based on data from European populations. For people of Asian descent, health risks associated with excess body fat tend to appear at lower BMI values.

Many health authorities — including the WHO and the Korean Ministry of Health — now use adjusted thresholds for Asian populations: a BMI of 23 or above is considered overweight, and 25 or above is obese. This difference matters: a person with a BMI of 24 would be classified as "normal" by the global standard but "overweight" by the Asia-Pacific standard. If you are of East Asian heritage, using the Asian-adjusted thresholds gives you a more accurate risk assessment.

How to Calculate Your BMI

The formula is: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². If you weigh 70 kg and are 1.75 m tall, your BMI is 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 ≈ 22.9. The Real Limitations of BMI

Despite its widespread use, BMI has important limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass. A highly muscular athlete might register as "overweight" or even "obese" even though their body fat percentage is very low. Conversely, someone with a normal BMI might still carry excess visceral fat if they have low muscle mass — a condition sometimes called "normal-weight obesity."

BMI also ignores where fat is distributed in the body. Visceral fat — the fat that accumulates around abdominal organs — is far more dangerous than subcutaneous fat beneath the skin. Two people with identical BMI scores can have very different health risk profiles depending on their fat distribution. Waist circumference measurements are often a better predictor of metabolic risk than BMI alone.

Using BMI as One Tool Among Many

Health professionals recommend using BMI as a screening tool alongside other measurements: waist circumference, body fat percentage, blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. A BMI outside the healthy range is a signal worth discussing with a healthcare provider — not a verdict on your overall health. Many factors influence health outcomes, and a single number cannot capture the full complexity of your body's condition.
